Too many icons

Too many icons in the Mac menu bar

A Mac menu bar with too many icons does not scroll and does not grow a second row. Icons you need fall off the edge, or slide behind the notch. ChocolateBar for Mac gives you both a way to hide menu bar apps and a way to see them.

Count the right-hand side of your menu bar. A password manager, Slack or Teams, a VPN, Dropbox or Drive, a launcher, a screenshot tool, maybe a stats monitor. The menu bar was built as one row of menus. It never learned to scroll, and it never grew a second line. When it fills, macOS drops icons off the left edge and says nothing.

If you only have one or two menu bar apps, you do not need a manager. This is for the bar that is already out of room.

Too many menu bar icons on a work Mac

The sharp version of this is a work Mac. IT installs the VPN, the device-management agent, the security tool, and the chat app. You did not choose them, and you cannot remove them. The icons you actually click, the ones for the tools you picked, are the ones that disappear.

ChocolateBar for Mac does not uninstall any of that. It gives the bar more room. Enable Hide Menubar Items and it tucks every menu bar app to the left of a boundary, so the top of the screen stays clear. Apple's own menu bar icons are off by default. Or leave the apps visible in a second row under the menu bar, full size, and click them there. The row opens with ⇧⌘B or a click on the ChocolateBar icon. Clicking an icon clicks the real menu bar item.

You can use either mode, or both. Profiles save a snapshot of which icons are hidden, their order, and the strip layout, so a pared-down work setup and a fuller home setup can be two different arrangements.

Hide, or see them

Hiders are a real answer. Bartender, Hidden Bar, Dozer, and Ice will tuck a crowded bar away, and for some people that is the whole job. ChocolateBar is the option that also shows the icons in a second row, because hiding was not what you wanted when the icon you needed vanished.

Comparisons, if you are choosing:

If the icons are specifically disappearing under a camera housing, the notch guide is the more exact page.

Questions people ask

What do I do if my Mac menu bar has too many icons?

Two options that do not involve quitting apps you still use. Hide the menu bar apps behind a boundary, or show them at full size in a second row under the menu bar. ChocolateBar for Mac does both. Apple's own menu bar icons are off by default.

I have too many menu bar icons on a work Mac. Can I remove them?

Often no. A managed Mac can fill the bar with VPN, device management, security, and chat icons that IT installed and you cannot uninstall. You can still see them. ChocolateBar shows those menu bar apps in a second row, or hides them when you want the top of the screen clear.

Is the answer to hide everything?

Only if you want them hidden. Bartender, Hidden Bar, and Dozer are built to tuck icons away. ChocolateBar can do that, and it can also keep the icons visible in a second row so a click still opens the real menu. Use whichever matches how you work.

Does this require a notch?

No. Too many icons is enough. The notch on a 14-inch or 16-inch MacBook Pro makes the bar run out of room sooner. An iMac, Mac mini, MacBook Air, or external display hits the same wall without one.
