A menu bar manager for Intel Mac

ChocolateBar for Mac is a menu bar manager for Intel Macs as well as Apple Silicon. It is a universal binary, so an Intel Mac does not need Rosetta to run it.

A lot of menu bar tools now read as Apple Silicon apps. ChocolateBar for Mac does not. It is a universal Mach-O binary: one download runs natively on Intel (x86_64) and on Apple Silicon (arm64). You do not install Rosetta to run it, and it is not an Electron app wrapped around a browser.

That matters if the Mac on your desk is still Intel and the menu bar is full. The job is the same as on a new MacBook. Hide the menu bar apps crowding the bar, or show them at full size in a second row under the menu bar. The row opens with ⇧⌘B or a click on the ChocolateBar icon. Click an icon in the row and ChocolateBar clicks the real menu bar item. No Screen Recording permission.

A menu bar app for Intel Mac, not a port

"Menu bar app for Intel Mac" usually means one of two things. You want a small utility that lives in the menu bar, or you want something that manages the other icons because there are too many of them. ChocolateBar is the second one. It is a menu bar manager. The apps it shows are the ones already in your menu bar: 1Password, Slack, a VPN, Dropbox, Raycast, and the rest.

Apple's own menu bar icons are off by default. Include system menu items is a separate switch, and it starts off, so the row stays on third-party menu bar apps.

Bartender alternative on an Intel Mac

If you are comparing Bartender, Ice, Thaw, Hidden Bar, or Dozer and the Mac in question is Intel, ChocolateBar is the paid option built around seeing those icons in a second row. Ice and Thaw are strong free, open-source choices if that is the requirement. Hidden Bar and Dozer are simpler hiders. The pages that go into each one:

macOS versions on Intel

An Intel Mac running ChocolateBar needs macOS 12 Monterey or a newer release in the supported range: Monterey, Ventura, Sonoma, or Sequoia. macOS 26 Tahoe support is coming soon. It does not run on Big Sur or earlier. The Ventura page covers the older-macOS case on its own, including a Mac that never had a notch.

The download is about 5 MB and uses about 30 MB of RAM at launch. It is $15 once. The next 20 buyers pay $12 with code LAUNCH30 at checkout. 48-hour free trial, no card. One year of updates. 7-day refund. Direct download, not the Mac App Store, because the app needs the Accessibility API.

Questions people ask

Is there a menu bar manager that still runs on an Intel Mac?

Yes. ChocolateBar for Mac ships as a universal binary, arm64 and x86_64, so it runs natively on Intel Macs and on Apple Silicon. It does not need Rosetta. It is not an Electron app.

Is ChocolateBar a Bartender alternative for Intel Mac?

It is a Bartender alternative in the sense that it manages a crowded menu bar. It can hide menu bar apps, and it can show them full size in a second row that opens with Shift-Command-B or a click on the ChocolateBar icon. The comparison with Bartender is linked from this page.

Which macOS versions work on Intel?

macOS 12 Monterey, macOS 13 Ventura, macOS 14 Sonoma, and macOS 15 Sequoia. macOS 26 Tahoe support is coming soon. macOS 11 Big Sur and earlier are not supported.

Does an Intel Mac without a notch need this?

If the menu bar has too many icons, yes. The notch is a MacBook Pro problem. An Intel iMac, Mac mini, or MacBook Pro with no notch still loses icons off the edge of a full bar. ChocolateBar shows that overflow in a second row, or hides the menu bar apps.

Try ChocolateBar for Mac on your own menu bar.
