ChocolateBar vs Ice: a free menu bar manager, or a second row
Last compared: 18 Oct 2026
Ice is a free, open-source menu bar manager, and a lot of people are happy with it. ChocolateBar for Mac is the paid alternative for when you want those icons in a second row you can see, not only a way to hide them.
Ice earned its place. It is free, it is open source, and it is the menu bar manager a lot of people already run when they want icons tucked away and brought back on demand. If that is the job, there is no reason to switch for the sake of switching.
Thaw is the successor people land on next. The Thaw comparison is the page for that app. This page is for the Ice question on its own.
Where ChocolateBar is actually different
ChocolateBar for Mac is a hide-and-show menu bar manager with a second row as the part Ice is not trying to be. Press ⇧⌘B, or click the ChocolateBar icon, and the menu bar apps that ran out of room appear full size under the menu bar, including icons a notch is hiding. Click one and ChocolateBar clicks the real menu bar item. It never asks for Screen Recording permission.
Running apps can share that row, one chip per app. That section is off by default: Settings > General > Show running apps, or ⌃⌘S. Apple's own menu bar icons are off by default too.
The honest split is the same one to use with Thaw. If you want free and open source, Ice is an excellent answer and I mean that. If you want the row always one shortcut away, with your menu bar apps in it, that is what the $15 is for. The next 20 buyers pay $12 with code LAUNCH30. There is a 48-hour trial.
Intel Macs, Ventura, and a full bar
ChocolateBar runs on Intel and Apple Silicon, from macOS 12 Monterey through 15 Sequoia, including macOS 13 Ventura. macOS 26 Tahoe support is coming soon. The pages for those cases:
- Menu bar manager for Intel Mac
- Menu bar manager for macOS Ventura
- Menu bar icons hidden behind the notch
- Too many menu bar icons
It is a native app, about 5 MB, paid once, with networking limited to update checks.

Questions people ask
Is ChocolateBar an Ice menu bar alternative?
Yes, if you want a different approach rather than another hider. Ice is free and open source, and it is a fair choice when that is what you want. ChocolateBar for Mac hides menu bar apps and can also show them full size in a second row. The row opens with Shift-Command-B or a click on the ChocolateBar icon.
Ice is free. Why pay?
Pay only if the second row is the thing you want, plus a one-time purchase, direct support, and no Screen Recording permission. If free and open source decides it, stay with Ice. Thaw, which succeeds Ice, is the other free option people compare. There is a 48-hour trial of ChocolateBar with no card.
Does this Ice alternative run on Intel Macs and macOS Ventura?
